The New Nokwanda Educare Centre

Empowering Education and Development:

At PYA, our mission revolves around nurturing the education and development of school-aged children in Africa. Our latest accomplishment is the transformation of the Nokwanda Educare Centre, a vital pre-school (“crèche”) situated in the heart of the Khayelitsha township, just outside Cape Town, South Africa.

Meet the Heart of The Centre

Founded in 2011, the Nokwanda Educare Centre is under the dedicated leadership of Nomthandazo Mvana, affectionately known as “Nokwanda.” Together with her awesome teachers, she tirelessly tended to the needs of 40+ children in an aged shack and a modest two-room house. Nokwanda’s passion is evident, but to truly realize her vision of creating an enriching experience for the students and her community she needed more space. In addition, the state of the centre called for a complete overhaul to ensure safety and create an environment conducive to learning.

A Future Brighter Than Ever

Project YES Africa set plans in motion to replace the existing structure with a brand-new, fully functional facility, radiating brightness and safety. This revamped centre is poised to open its doors to double the number of eager learners.

With this rebuild, Nokwanda has been empowered to educate in an environment that’s not only safer, but also more conducive to learning. The UBU team, with their wealth of architectural and building expertise, ensured that the highest standards of design, materials, and plans were employed throughout the construction process. The builders, drawn from the local community, not only breathe life into this project, but also gain valuable experience, setting them on a path towards future employment opportunities.
